About the Fall 2025
Bible Study of
First & Second Peter

First Peter 4:1-19

Some Questions We Will Consider
About this Chapter

In chapter 4 of his first letter, Peter at times seems to refer back to themes he has touched on earlier in this letter. So, consider:

  • How does 4:1 relate to 2:11?
  • How does 4:2-4 relate to 1:18?
  • How does 4:7 relate to 1:13?

In verses 7-11, Peter touches on the matter of our serving the saints. What progression do we see here in the matter of our serving?

Hint: For instance, consider the example of Steven and Phillip in Acts 6-8.

  • Three times in this epistle, Peter speaks of the love we should have for our brothers and sisters in Christ: 1:22, 2:27, and 4:8. What progression do we see here in the matter of our love?
  • Also, how does the last instance relate to what the Lord said in John 13:35?
  • Why does Peter bring in the matter of a “fiery trial” in 4:12? How does this relate to 1:6-7?
  • Why does judgment “begin from the house of God?” And why does Peter tell us that the righteous “saved with difficulty?” (cf. 1:9).

The Books of  1 & 2 Peter…

…are short, yet cover the entire span of God’s work, from His choosing of the believers in eternity past (1 Pet. 1:2), all the way to His bringing in the new heaven and new earth in eternity future (2 Pet. 3:13).

And in between, they cover so many aspects of the Christian life. In his first letter Peter deals with the basic experiences we must pass through as the believers in Christ, who are “chosen…unto obedience” (1 Pet. 1:2). This includes the many trials we will experience as we walk the path of faith, for, as Peter tells us, “it is the time for the judgment to begin from the house of God” (1 Pet. 4:17). Yet, God has called us “into His eternal glory in Christ Jesus” (1 Pet. 5:10), and so in the end He will bring us safely through to Himself.

Then, from the basic experiences we see in 1 Peter, we go on to the deeper spiritual experiences found in 2 Peter, so that God may deal with all those who oppose His work and ultimately bring in His eternal kingdom; for

….we, according to His promise, are looking for a new heaven and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
— 2 Peter 3:13

About Our
Bible Study

This will be a participatory Bible study, not simply a lecture series. And, we will be studying the Scripture itself, rather than theology or Bible commentaries.

We plan on studying one chapter a week. So, we encourage those in the study to read the chapter ahead of time, more than once if possible, and to consider for themselves, What is this chapter really all about? And, How did it speak to me

Then, when we meet together, we will share with each other what we came up with for each of these points. In some meetings we may also have some ministry about the chapter as a whole.

Our goal is, first of all, to help those attending learn to study the word of God for themselves, and second, to gain a basic grasp of the books we are studying, in this case 1 & 2 Peter.
